How to Celebrate a Scary St Patrick’s Day

The countdown to St Patrick’s Day 2019 is ticking away! In a few short days, a sea of green will take over cities across the world. The scent of corned beef and Guinness will infiltrate the air. You might even catch a St Patrick’s Day parade in your home city… and you might even be looking forward to a little debauchery.

There’s nothing wrong with celebrating Saint Patrick the traditional way. But if you’re a fanatic of everything horrific and gory, why not celebrate a scary St Patrick’s Day this year?

It might not be October yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a taste of the greatest time of year in March. And even though St Patrick’s Day is only days away, there’s still time to make the celebration a little bit creepy.

If you’re ready to have a spooky St Patrick’s Day 2019, here are some ideas to inspire you!

St Patrick’s Day Costumes

What’s a scary St Patrick’s Day without creepy costumes to go with it?

Contrary to what some may argue, St Patrick’s Day is a great reason to dress up in costume. You’ve probably seen people dress up in ridiculous get-ups on this holiday, anyway. But what’s stopping you from channeling your inner green zombie or evil leprechaun this Sunday?

Of course, a leprechaun costume is by far the most popular choice. If you already have a green suit, a matching hat, buckled shoes, and a beard to go with it all, you’re in luck. But to create this costume, there are a few options you could try.

For starters, you could lather on some green face paint and cover your hands and arms, as well. Not only is green skin reminiscent of witches, Frankenstein, and ghouls. You’ll look less human and more monsterly and possessed. If you have colored costume eye contacts, be sure to wear them!

Make your green skin appear rotting to add to the creepiness. There are several ways to do this. But the easiest way is to rip apart cotton balls and apply them on your skin with liquid latex. This will make your skin appear like it’s falling apart.

You don’t have to be an evil leprechaun to pull off this look, either. You could be the zombie of a St. Patrick’s Day celebrator or an Irish bagpiper. You could simply be a green monster. After making your skin appear green and rotten, wrap an Irish flag around your shoulders, put on a kilt, or cover yourself in fake shamrocks. If you don’t have green body paint, you could apply fake wounds and fake blood, too.

Creepy Beverages & Irish Food

Aside from wearing green, eating and drinking is another big part of St Patrick’s Day. Beer, corned beef, and cabbage are the standards. But what can you eat and drink to help you celebrate a scary St Patrick’s Day this year?

When it’s time to skip the beer and try a cocktail, make sure to have a creepy cocktail garnish to go with it. For fruity, sweet drinks, try a lychee ball with a blueberry (it looks like an eyeball.) Or, you can drizzle some red, syrupy liqueur on your glass and make it look like blood.

Use strawberry syrup and the “lychee eyeball” garnish for non-alcoholic beverages. You could also whip up a green potion punch made with sherbet and lemon-lime soda. If you have a fog machine or dry ice, use it to add to the spooky ambiance.

Not a fan of corned beef? There is Irish meatloaf, and it’s perfect if you’re looking to celebrate a scary St Patrick’s Day. Irish meatloaf is traditionally served with a red tomato sauce.

You can mold your loaf of ground beef into any creepy shape you want. For example, you could mold it into a hand, a head, or anything you put your creative mind to.

If you’ll be serving up potatoes for dinner, try a colcannon recipe. It’s a traditional mashed potato dish popular in Ireland. It’s usually mixed with cooked kale or cabbage. To make it creepy, drizzle a red gravy sauce over it. You can even trick your dinner guests this Sunday by telling them that the gravy is “mystery meat”.

Stay in & Relax (and Don’t Forget to Lock Your Doors!)

Looking to avoid the chaos of your local St Patrick’s Day parade and the debauchery of the entire holiday?

We wouldn’t blame you for wanting to stay in and have a relaxing Sunday! St Patrick’s Day is a great day to stay in and watch movies. There are a number of great films about Irish identity and culture.

However, if you’re a horror fan 365 days a year, then there’s no better movie to watch than Leprechaun (film). The horror comedy was a box office flop – but it is forever ingrained as a horror cult movie. The film stars Warwick Davis as an evil leprechaun on a blood-thirsty hunt for his pot of gold. The film also stars Jennifer Aniston in her first film debut.

Leprechaun (film) is often broadcasted on St Patrick’s Day. So, be sure to check your local listings or your go-to streaming service to see when if it’s available this Sunday. You’ll be in for some laughs, as well as a fright!
